When the LGBT community is not united with social movements that address the issues facing the most marginalized LGBT people, with racial justice proponents (proportionally more people of color identify as queer), with those fighting against systemic poverty, with pacifists, are we really making any progress? Or has the LGBT movement been kidnapped by power elites advocating for their own interests? The dilemma is reminiscent of an image circling some corners of the web: A white gay male couple superimposed over the Human Rights Campaign red equality symbol that dominated Facebook during the gay marriage Supreme Court hearings.

UFC fighter suspended for tweeting gay slur

gaywrites:

TW: Gay slurs.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship this week suspended fighter Nate Diaz after he called another fighter “the biggest fag in the world” on Twitter.

To make matters worse, his manager later said the slur wasn’t meant to target LGBT people, but was intended to “refer to a punk or a bitch.” Oh. That’s better.

“We are very disappointed by Nate Diaz’s comments, which are in no way reflective of our organization,” the UFC wrote in a widely circulated statement. “Nate is currently suspended pending internal investigation and we will provide further comment once the matter has been decided.”

USA Today noted that this year the UFC formally established rules prohibiting discriminatory comments.

Last month, UFC suspended heavyweight Matt Mitrione for calling transgender fighter Fallon Fox a “disgusting freak.” Several publications have pointed out, however, that Mitrione was signed for a fight less than three weeks later.

Come on, we were playing so nicely with the sporting world! Guess we’ve still got a long way to go.
